Situations to Avoid Using Those Credit Cards and Keep Yourself Out of Debt
You can more than likely stay out of overwhelming debt if you avoid using your credit cards altogether. At first, the thought of this might be scary but once you learn how to avoid the situations where you are most likely to use a credit card, you will be well on your way to better financial health. Here are a few of those situations to avoid using a credit card:
Avoid impulse buying and buying the first thing you see to keep out of debt. Allow yourself to cool off a little before buying something you really like but don’t have the cash for. You would be surprised how that if you just walk away and sleep on a decision about a credit purchase you are about to make that most of the time you will decide against it. And that is exactly what salespeople and marketers understand too. That is also why they don’t like to let you walk away and think about it. Understand this aspect about human psychology and it just might help you avoid debt.
Avoid using credit cards for anything. Live on a cash-only basis. Get yourself a debit card from your bank with a Visa or MasterCard logo on it so that you can rent a car or make internet purchases. If you have a bad habit of pulling out a credit card each time you want to buy something then it will be difficult for awhile but practicing this good habit will help you get over the unhealthy one. If you are struggling with it then don’t carry your credit cards anywhere. Leave them at home.
Avoid holiday season and special occasion temptations. You are probably thinking that you could conquer and avoid all these pitfalls throughout the year until the holiday season shows up. Then, you feel this overwhelming need to buy everyone you know a gift. This is in spite of the fact you know for sure you cannot afford it. Remember that the debt you build up during the holiday season will stare at you for more years than it is worth.
Avoid vacations you know you cannot afford or at least cut back. There was a family once who wanted to go to Disneyland in California but they were on a tight budget. They could afford to get there and could afford the tickets to the theme park but the hotel rates were outrageous. They found that there were recreational vehicle parks with showers and tent sites right next to the park. Since they were going to spend the entire day at the park anyways, the tent site was perfect. The kids were at an age where they thought camping out was cool and to top it off, they got to go to Disneyland the next day. This is the type of creativity that helps people avoid getting into debt over their heads.
Avoid spending all your money. Do you spend all your pocket money just because you have it? Try saving some of it on a regular basis and you will avoid using a credit card.
Avoid impressing people with luxuries. If you have a habit of buying only the most expensive and luxurious items on credit to impress everyone you know then you are on your way to serious debt problems. Avoid the luxury items and you will see that standard items suit your needs just fine.
