Changing Your Children’s Lifestyle
We strive hard to provide the best for our children; either to give them a life that we were accustomed to, or give them something we were not fortunate enough to experience growing up. For them, we will be able to cross oceans and act like ATM machines. But in this day and age, we should be thinking of ways to teach them to work for themselves instead of viewing life as another party to attend.
You have to admit that your children is responsible for a large portion of your debt, especially if you think that the basic necessities of life include a sports car, a pool house, weekly parties and designer clothes. Your intention of providing for them a comfortable life became somewhat distorted and no one can blame you with the consumerism happening across the country. If you’ve accumulated quite a huge debt, now is the time to nip the bud of the problem; if not the root.
If your kids have credit and debit cards, you might want to take it back. Put a limit to their spending, and make sure that they stick with it. Give them their allowance on a daily basis, so that they will learn to live off what they have. You should also monitor how they spend their money, and what they buy with their allowance. If they saved some money during the week, don’t let them spend it on unnecessary things such as makeup, accessories and bags.
Their cars must be fuel efficient, so as to save on gas. If your children go to the same school, they do not each have to drive individual cars to school. They can just all go together to save on gas and mileage. The older kids can also bring their younger siblings to school especially if it’s along their way. Giving them a responsibility will improve the way they view life.
Kids hate hand-me-downs, but in some cases the clothes and the shoes still look brand new that they wouldn’t know the difference. Instead of saying that the clothes are no longer wanted by their older siblings, you can tell your little son that he should start wearing his older brother’s clothes because he’s getting bigger.
If your kids have accumulated a lot of toys, accessories and other “junk”, maybe it’s time that they have a garage sale. The money will go into a fund that they use for travel, so that they do not need to ask you for money if they’ll be going out on trips with their friends. A garage sale will also lessen the rubbish in your home.
There are other ways that you can start teaching your kids the value of money. If they’re still young, it will be easier for them to get used to the idea that money has to be spent wisely; the older kids will be more rebellious but they will soon warm up to the idea. You just have to set an example and enforce the new rules so that they understand how serious you are.
